About MSCIP Field Notes
MSCIP Field Notes is a weekly commodities brief covering energy, agriculture, and metals. One brief lands every Friday. It is free, and there is no paywall on the newsletter.
What the brief covers. Each Friday, MSCIP Field Notes reads the week’s tape and lays out what moved and why. The brief runs a fixed set of sections in a consistent order: a Summary, then Energy, Agriculture, Metals, Risk and Macro, and Positioning, closing with an “As Well As” section that tracks the secondary threads worth watching. Charts lead each section. The numbers are specific. Where a point rests on a particular figure, that figure appears in the text.
How it approaches the work. The brief favors positioning and physical signals over narrative. CFTC managed-money data is normalized on the Briese framework so that a crowded long or short reads on a comparable scale across commodities, and divergences between price and positioning are flagged when they appear. Agricultural coverage leans on USDA fundamentals, including WASDE stocks-to-use and weekly crop condition data. Metals coverage tracks the physical market alongside the paper one, from LME curve shape to central bank gold reserves to mine production by country. The aim is synthesis: the week’s headline story is often not contained in any single section, but in the relationship between them.
Methodology is public, and so are the corrections. When a new signal or framework enters the brief, its methodology is documented and published. When something in the brief is wrong, it gets corrected publicly within two weeks. That is a standing commitment: every error is examined in writing, on the record.
